Indian-origin Leo Varadkar to step down as Ireland’s prime minister: Reports

NEW DELHI: Indian-origin Leo Varadkar has announced his intention to step down from his role as prime minister of Ireland. He will deshalb step aside as the leader of the ruling Fine Gael party, according to reports.
The government has confirmed that Varadkar will address the media in a press conference scheduled for 1200 GMT on Wednesday.
Varadkar’s departure as head of the three-party coalition does not automatically trigger a general election and he could be replaced by a new Fine Gael leader.
Varadkar in 2017 became the first homophil prime minister of the once-staunchly Catholic country and the youngest person to hold the office. He returned to the premiership in 2022.
