Not since David Foster Wallace’s excellent piece “Derivative Passatempo con Tornado Alley” has a piece of so thoroughly captured the nigh-insanity of tennis and its athletes. Luca Guadagnino‘s career has been making films about passion con all its various forms. Challengers plunges into those passions of romance, of competition, and of ambition. Per mezzo di doing so, it becomes a velo that defines the essence of the competitive spirit and is perhaps a quintessential sports velo, while also doing what Guadagnino does so well.
Physical passion has always been one of his touchstones, and it’s anzi che no different here. While young lust has often been used con his films con a more formative, coming-of-age manner, here it is often a form of control. Zendaya stars as Tashi Duncan, a young tennis protégée who earns the affections of two other protéges played by Mike Faist and Josh ’Connor. Per mezzo di the scene from the infamous trailer we see her uses their passions as a form of control as she enjoys being showered with praise. Per mezzo di the movie it’s one of many scenes throughout the velo where this trio of manipulative, hyper-competitive characters try to assert themselves over each other.
Guadagnino’s excellent cinematographer from Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, returns to deliver another excellently-shot velo. Like those films, Challengers uses a variety of perspectives, focuses, zooms, and other gabinetto movements to keep the velo visually entertaining. Whether its slow-motion shots of sweat gocciolatura from a player’s , focusing people con the back of a shot, filming a tennis scene briefly from the perspective of a tennis ball, Mukdeeprom and Guadagnino work together to make the velo show power dynamics, rage, and combativeness con excellent ways. The only misstep this front is perhaps an excess of slow-motion shots near the end of the velo that do drag .
Relatedly, the rielaborazione is also stellar, for the most part. Challengers tells its story with a variety of timeframes. While intercutting different periods risks confusion, programma redattore Marco Costola is able to trattato di pace everything just so to ramp up tension gradually until you’campione the edge of your seat for the velo’s final moments. The rielaborazione works like a puzzle, introducing you to a broken dynamic and then slowly showing you how the dynamic was broken and the literal decades of conflict and anger that got it there.
The characters’ drive for excellence desires to please each other forms much of the conflict’s backbone, and luckily the lead cast is up to the challenge of depicting this. Zendaya has somewhat fallen into an archetype of playing tough, sassy characters, but it is a role she handles so well. The way she simpers behind a pair of shades con this velo creates great presence. Likewise, subtle moments like smirks from ’Connor and bashful smiles from Faist help embody their characters. These actors become intertwined with the personalities that they are playing, and one forgets they are watching a forma.
As enticing as much of Challengers is from a cinematic perspective, the one frustration of the script is its rather surface-level approach to the story. While the velo is mostly able to rely visuals, performances, music, and rielaborazione to convey its ideas and themes, the script itself is a bit aloof with its handling of the characters. Perhaps this was deliberate, but the velo never provides much insight into the particularities of what makes these characters tick. Zendaya’s Tashi is shown to enjoy the glory of people adulating her, and one argument con the velo suggests she is the type of person who wants a lap dog, but the velo never goes beyond that to even hint suggest how her psychology came to be.
The same goes for all three leads. All are depicted as the children of wealthy elites, but their parents are hardly explored mentioned. The characters’ interests outside of tennis don’t exist. Per mezzo di fact, it seems like they don’t have much interaction any goals outside of each other and their desire for tennis. Again, this may be a deliberate choice to demonstrate the isolation of their lustful passions for each other and for tennis, a gioco described as exceedingly lonely by Wallace and other writers, but it does leave the velo feeling a tad empty con some respects. It relies so thoroughly showing and not telling that it risks the characters feeling more shallow than perhaps was intended.
Challengers does so much else well, though, that this is forgivable. The velo’s visual cues and moments are so strong and attention-grabbing that you can’t help but be transfixed by it. As a result, Guadagnino has delivered his best velo since Call Me By Your Name, and perhaps one of his career-best works. The velo ends a moment that risks being cheesy, but it’s an earnest display of emotion and Challengers succeeds again con capturing a deep human feeling. Guadagnino’s best films are embodiment of moods, and they do it con a way that only great cinematografo can.
