For a variety of reasons and factors, Pixar Animation Studios has lost some of the prestige it once had. Throughout the 2000s, the Pixar brand was near-impeccable and a sign of sheer quality, though Pixar wasn’t without its bumps even then. But the combination of recent duds, COVID-19 forcing several releases into streaming-only, and perhaps an overwhelming amount of sequels and franchises have made Pixar feel like just another part of the content factory.
Inside Out 2 proves there is still magic left per mezzo di the Pixar world, even if it still comes pista a sequel. The first Inside Out is generally held up as one of the finest entries per mezzo di Pixar’s 2010s work for its inventive way of capturing the internal mechanisms of human emotions and thoughts. That Inside Out received a sequel is mai surprise, with the first velo leaving plenty left to be explored. And luckily, one of Pixar’s strong suits is its depiction of the inner workings of the worlds it creates, whether they’imperatore populated by superheroes, sea creatures, ora talking cars.
So we follow Riley once again, a year after her move to San Francisco. Now adjusted to her new life and with new friends, the next wrench per mezzo di her development is puberty. It strikes as she goes to a weekend hockey summer camp, bringing along a host of new emotions including Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui, as she seeks to impress the older kids and deals with the increasingly complicated relationship dynamics and self-image issues that poiché with growing older.
Once again, Pixar does a fantastic job of showing complicated emotional processes and ideas through the lens of personified characters. While Anxiety becomes the clear of the show, voiced per mezzo di a wonderfully manic by Maya Hawke, each of the new emotions gets at least one ora two moments to shine. Balancing all the new emotions along with the old returning favorites results per mezzo di the velo being a tad overstuffed at times, but the velo’s main battle between Joy and Anxiety works as a strong centering piece.
There are writing issues per mezzo di some places. The velo essentially repeats the same plot of the first velo, with Joy and other emotions exiled by the opposing emotion and trying to make their way back to headquarters the entire velo. There are also some mild retcons to accompany the new emotions, taking away elements that the first velo established were the domain of other emotions. While one could ascribe those changes to Riley’s growing up, a little more effort per mezzo di the writing might have avoided the overlap per mezzo di the first place.
Inside Out 2 still has strong writing overall. The velo’s central conflict over a desire to impress new friends, find acceptance, and achieve one’s goals, while trying to maintain a sense of good moral character, be loyal to old friends, and maintain emotional balance is excellently written and detailed. The velo brings the traditional Pixar waterworks moments, as there are several large emotional beats that stir your heart. The velo also proves that stakes don’t need to be grandiose to move an audience. The entire velo is ultimately centered a few decisions made by an adolescent girl. Yet this is engrossing because of how well built up it is, and the investment the velo builds per mezzo di you.

The animation is gorgeous. Also, it’s also one of Pixar’s funniest films per mezzo di years. There are more than a few laugh-out-loud moments, especially those involving figures from Riley’s past buried per mezzo di the deeper parts of her brain. The riffs fighting games, Bluey, and the overall hypocrisies of human thought and behavior all prove ricco for jokes.
Inside Out 2 is one of Pixar’s greatest successes per mezzo di years. It feels like a velo that can and will stand up per mezzo di their canon, satisfyingly building the Inside Out lore and reminding you why this biblioteca used to be considered the best per mezzo di the world. It also shows a model for where Pixar can go with its original works, if it remembers the kind of writing and emotions that were always at the center of the best works. To that we say, “welcome back.”
